It had a student parking pass.

Kinja'd!!!

Starts at $115,000 US. which is more than my degree will cost. Which made me angry at the world for a little bit. It is the first one I’ve seen in the wild.

Go to MSU or Prudue. That Asian foreign exchange student money is crazy.

GTR’s are chump change there.

Back in the ‘90s when the Europa International in Santa Fe was the only distributor of them in the US I used to see them all the time. Yep one of the poorest states in the union used to be the only place to buy a very expensive MB. http://www.nytimes.com/1999/03/21/aut…

Can you figure out what year it is? I was at Comm. College and was in an Ethics class with a kid (23yo) driving a 650i convertible. I asked him how he could afford such a thing, and he told me he had worked and saved since entering high school and he decided to buy it used for $30,000. Sometimes there’s a perfect explanation, other times it’s mom and dad.

My single most reliable piece of car advice has always been “Whatever you drive in college will be a piece of shit in 4 years.”

I still stand by it. Nothing like a bunch of half-drunk short trips all day long, door dings, and lack of covered parking or maintenance to completely destroy something. Colleges should just entice you with a 2001 Honda Accord when you get accepted.

I’m thinking he saved about 500 and mommy and daddy paid the rest.

I do think people shouldn’t judge as much as they do. If I had worked and saved everything since I was 16, I could probably afford a cheap 360 or a very base model used F10 M5. (Basically anything around $50,000) But almost nobody is that good with not spending money.

I don’t think he had any reason to lie about it. It is that hard to believe some people have nice things because they worked and paid for them rather than having them handed over for no effort?

And I’d bet that like the BMW, that G class has some pretty mean depreciation in the used market. Yup first result on ebaymotors, 2004 G-class 108,000 for the price of a fancy Ford Escape.

My fiancee saved everything from her jobs in high school through college. She had enough money to put a down payment on our house. People can be really good at saving money when they live at home and have no bills.

Yeah prices drop like bricks. It’s because people get wary about the maintenance as the miles go up. That, and 15mpg isn’t that great.

Yeah, I worked with a kid (early 20s) who screwed around with investments in college. He gambled on a little stock based out of Baltimore that made athletic gear. Not sure what he sold his Under Armour stock for, but his new Z4 car payment was really, really low. And he had a small UA sticker on it. So yeah, sometimes it’s another reality that got the young person into a nice car.

guess we didn’t have the same jobs during high school.....

crap I hardly spent anything, had trouble putting gas in my 1985 sentra wagon that was given to me by my parents. Minimum Wage and school hours don’t give you many hours to actually work.

Certain countries will pay for certain students to attend a university in certain foreign countries. Because your Dad shouldn’t have to spend his hard earned oil money so you can show off your #1 American Luxury Lifestyle.

Yeah I wish I had that. My brother in law still lives at home just for that reason. I mean its a PITA but he is saving 4-600 bucks a month just by not having to pay rent. so figure about 6 grand a year, plus he doesn’t pay for much of his own food, and his job pays for his phone, basically his only bills are car insurance, and diesel for his Jetta.

That’s true - working a minimum wage job in high school sucks. I remember getting $7/hour at the gas station, and then $11/hour working at a Plant Nursery. Some find better jobs though. My fiance worked at a Unilever factory during summers in high school and was banking $18/hour, then at a home goods store during the school year. No bills, hand-me-down car from her parents, etc. It just depends on what your situation is. There are lots of people that have it easy and get stuff handed to them, but I can’t blame them for it. I can be jealous and envious, but it won’t help.

I felt like a bum for living with my parents so long (moved out when I was 25), but it helped a lot. I was able to save more than I thought and jump into home ownership immediately.

Oh yeah I do. Houses are expensive, and so are car payments and student loans. Make no mistake we’re comfortable, but not rolling around in money. Once her car is paid off then I can get a car, and she plans to go back for her Master Degree when her loan is paid down another 50% or so and I get a raise.

I’m not jelly at all, I just come from a small rural town in northern canada., still live here btw. I was one of the most well off in my class. I actually had a car, even if given to me. To me it’s just impossible to make that amount of money at that age. When I went to John abbot college in 1996 many students there had BMWs and Mercedes, and they where all bought buy mommy and daddy. John Abbot is on the west island of montreal and is considered rich...

ok I STILL don’t get the MSU thing. I never saw exotics on campus from 04-08 when I was there. More over, I was there last weekend, all over campus and downtown EL - zero exotics.

Interesting, you may have just caught a bad day. And they are exactly everywhere, just a much higher amount that you would generally expect to say on an average day.

I’m know I’ve mentioned it before. But I moved my sister last weekend and saw five GT-R’s alone. I have also seen a substantial amount of Porsche’s, Maserati’s, Lamborghini’s etc.

Ans just a random article “ Steve Shaheen, general manager of Okemos Auto Collection, a BMW (BMW:GR) and Mercedes dealer near Michigan State University in East Lansing, says he’s seen his sales to Chinese students rise to as much as 15 percent of his total business, from zero five years ago.

That’s crazy, but it happening in the last 5 years (or at least really taking off in that time) is probably why it doesn’t “click” to me.
